Volume without breakage

Shaw Tease — Hair Volume and Teasing Guide | shawtease.com

Backcombing, also called teasing or ratting, builds volume by combing hair toward the scalp so strands tangle at the root. Done on dry hair with the right hold level and removed from the ends upward, it adds height without snapping the hair shaft.

What teasing actually does to the strand

Backcombing tangles hair toward the scalp so the knots sit at the root and the top layer covers them.

Backcombing, also known as teasing or ratting, builds volume by combing hair toward the scalp so the strands tangle at the root. The knots act as a scaffold: the hair above them stands up instead of lying flat.

Teasing is done on dry hair. Wet hair stretches and breaks more easily because its tensile strength drops when wet, so a damp strand pushed back toward the scalp is the fastest route to split ends.

The visible height comes from the top layer, smoothed over the teased roots with a boar-bristle brush that flattens the surface without pulling the knots out.

  • Volume sits at the root, not along the length
  • The top layer must stay smooth and knot-free
  • Boar bristles distribute oils while smoothing

Procedure dossier

Section by section: the ordered procedure

Prep, part, backcomb, smooth, set — in that order, on dry hair.

Start with fully dry hair and a rat-tail comb. Part a section 2 to 5 cm thick at the crown; the pointed handle of the comb is what makes the parting clean.

Hold the section straight up, place the comb a few centimetres from the roots and push down toward the scalp in short strokes. Repeat three to five strokes per section until the roots feel packed.

Lay the section back down, smooth the top layer with a boar-bristle brush, then set with a hairspray at hold level 2 or 3. Work through the crown in overlapping sections before moving to the sides.

  • Prep: dry hair, optional dry shampoo at 10–15 cm from roots
  • Section: 2–5 cm panels parted with the rat-tail handle
  • Backcomb: 3–5 downward strokes per section
  • Smooth: boar-bristle brush over the top layer only
  • Set: hairspray at hold level 2–3

Choosing spray hold and brush type

Retail hairsprays grade hold from 1 (light) to 5 (extra strong); levels 2–3 suit teased styles.

A hold level 1 spray will not lock knots in place through a full day, while level 5 leaves the hair stiff and harder to brush out without breakage. Levels 2 and 3 are the working range for backcombed volume.

Many high-hold hairsprays use film-forming copolymers such as PVP/VA: as the solvent evaporates, the polymer sets the style. That is why spraying feels wet for a few seconds and then the shape holds.

For fine hair, dry shampoo sprayed about 10–15 cm from the roots adds grip before teasing, giving the comb something to tangle against instead of slipping.

  • Level 1–2: soft, brushable hold for everyday volume
  • Level 3: working range for teased crowns
  • Level 4–5: extra strong, stiffer to remove

Typical failures and how to avoid them

Most damage comes from teasing wet hair, over-stroking, and brushing out from the roots.

Teasing damp hair is the first failure: wet strands stretch and snap because tensile strength drops when wet. Wait until the hair is completely dry.

The second failure is stroke count. Pushing a comb twenty times into one section packs knots so tightly that removal requires force, and force breaks hair.

The third failure is removal. Dragging a brush from the scalp outward catches every knot at once; starting at the ends and working upward in small sections lets knots release gradually.

  • Wet hair + backcombing = stretched, broken strands
  • Too many strokes = knots too tight to release
  • Brushing from the roots = snarls caught mid-shaft

Common objections, answered

Can I tease wet hair to save time?
No — wet hair stretches and breaks more easily because its tensile strength drops when wet. Wait until hair is fully dry, or use dry shampoo 10–15 cm from the roots for grip.
Which hairspray strength should I buy?
Pick hold level 2 or 3 from the retail 1–5 scale. Level 1 will not hold knots through the day; level 4–5 is stiffer and harder to brush out without breakage.
How do I get the knots out at night?
Start brushing at the ends and work upward in small sections. A boar-bristle brush separates strands gradually instead of yanking through a packed knot.
Does backcombing always cause damage?
Damage comes from teasing wet hair, over-stroking, and brushing out from the roots. On dry hair with three to five strokes per section and end-first removal, the technique stays manageable.
